EVERYWHERE IS PUMPING!
Hands up if you’ve been getting spoiled lately! All of our needs as surfers have been catered for and then some in the last fortnight, from amazing waves at home to the best surfing contest we’ve ever seen in Tahiti and mind-bending clips from around the world just starting to come together.
The build up to the Billabong Pro was definitely off the charts on the hype-meter, but thankfully the first day of competition delivered and gave us all an great indication of what was to come. With the ASP commissioner Kieren Perrow and team picking the eyes out of the forecast, we were lucky enough to see each day of competition receive solid to scary-size perfection and most importantly, the finals day ran in the best waves of the waiting period. Among the highlights were terrifying wipe outs and AI style commitment from Owen Wright to win the late champ’s eponymous award, the best semi-final of all time between Kelly and John John that has to be seen to be believed, and Gabriel Medina narrowly edging out the King in a hard fought final. If you haven’t dissected the HEAT ANALYSER with a fine tooth comb we suggest you do so immediately!
Back in Australia, all of the points in South East QLD have been firing with shots aplenty of the more well known places and the odd story filtering through of people scoring uncrowded gems. With long walls and plenty of tube time on offer the Primitive MVP and a few prototypes of the new mystery model have been getting a good workout. We’re stoked to hear all of the positive feedback, as everyone from the shapers to the shredders and the everyday punters have loved the performance of the boards. As if that wasn’t enough, 1000km down the coast the Red Bull Cape Fear challenge is set to run this Sunday at Ours, just near Botany Bay. The boxing-card style heat draw includes matchups between Mark Matthews and Jamie O’Brien, Bruce Irons and Koby Abberton, and even Rasta vs Laurie Towner. Combined with a large swell and strong offshores it should make for one memorable day of viewing! A quick browse of your social media platforms, surfing websites or even a good old chart will also tell you that Indonesia is about to be peppered by another round of swell, as the Indian Ocean’s bumper season refuses to die off. Even California has been world class in the last few days as well, producing everything from dredging beachbreaks (The Wedge!) to pumping points (Laird at Malibu!) and perfect peaks at Trestles giving us a taste of what’s to come at the next world tour contest. As always with surfing, enough is never enough.
